Statement: Racism has been a persistent issue in the United States for centuries, with a long history of systemic oppression and discrimination against people of color, Native Americans, Hispanic Americans, and other marginalized groups. Being born and raised in Puerto Rico, with some Colombian roots, I know what it feels like to find oneself outside of the dominant culture. When I came to the United States, my initial experience encouraged me to identify and value differences. Through this body of work, I showcase my experiences as an outsider. The words reflected in each piece are words that have been said to me while living in America. Here I am standing there like an idiot again... is about being in a state of shock while going through the same experience repeatedly.

A strong design takes from personal backgrounds and life experiences. That is the essence of what makes it stand out from the rest. I am a firm believer as a designer and artist that we aren’t here just to sell a product, but more so to advocate an idea or statement. We have the power to call the viewer’s attention and spread the word. Through my freelance clients I’ve always searched for projects that matter, that make a change to society or the community in which I live.
